Liberation Lies Ahead

PALESTINIAN YOUTH MOVEMENT

We created this poster the week after 6 Palestinian political prisoners (Zakaria Zubeidi, Mahmoud Abdullah Ardah, Mohamed Qassem Ardah, Yaqoub Mahmoud Qadri, Ayham Nayef Kamanji, and Munadil Yaqoub Nfeiat) escaped from an Israeli prison (September 6th 2021). During this moment of the unity intifada, the intention behind this poster was to honor our political prisoners and our martyrs, those who are at the forefront of our fight towards liberation.

The poster includes several symbols including the escape hole and spoon, the palestinian poppy with roots leadiing to the word “Intifada”, and a speech bubble with the phrase “liberation lies ahead” in the tarweedeh (an encrypted/coded) style of song.

The escape hole and spoon that was used to dig the tunnel through which the political prisoners escaped is included in our poster to bring attention to the sacrifices our people make in the fight for freedom. They show us that freedom is materially possible, even if just for a few days this time. At the bottom of the print is the word “Intifada” meaning uprising. From Intifada sprouts a Palestinian Poppy, a symbol of our martyrs, that dots the hills of Palestine every year after first rain. A visual reminder of all that is sacrificed for our lands, our people, and our eventual liberation. Above the land and poppy is a speech bubble singing “liberation lies ahead”. The song is styled in the tarweedeh style of song that women used during the British occupation of Palestine to send coded messages to prisoners instructing them of their escape. Our women are the voice of the revolution, always leading us home, reminding us that liberation does lie ahead.
