EXCERPT

I’ve been researching the life and work of Ismail Shammout, Palestinian artist and historian, and put these slides together to share some of my findings! I started in the Palestine Poster Project archives then made my way to the Nakba Archive then to Ismail’s short films then spent some quality time engaging with primary and secondary source materials to learn more about Ismail’s journey through life as an artist, a colonized person, and someone committed to transmuting all of life’s energies and emotions and feelings into artistic creations. Ismail’s creative labors uplift the history and life of Palestine and Palestinians and I am deeply honored to have access to his work and I encourage you all to learn more about and engage with his art. These slides are meant to serve as a point of departure for doing your own deep dives and research.

Image descriptions:

The first slides offer a brief introduction to what the Palestine Poster Project digital (and free) archive is and feature select art from Ismail’s The Spring That Was Series. The next slides feature video footage (with accompanying lyrics/transcripts) from Ismail’s short film The Urgent Call of Palestine with a clip from a song by Zeinab Shaath, an interview with Kamal Nasser, an interview with Ismail, an excerpt from a biography about Ismail, and and excerpt from an essay about Ismail by Samia A. Halaby.
