I'm afraid the exhibition will be in San Francisco during the dates you request in January. There is a possibility that the exhibition will be in the DC area later in 2014. Shall I keep you posted as the schedule develops? Below are some FAQ's about hosting the exhibition. We are in the midst of developing a curriculum, including films and speaker suggestions that should be completed in early 2014. Thank you for your interest! Jennifer Bing Logistics Coordinator, Boycott Exhibition FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions 1. How many posters are in the exhibition? There are 61 posters in the exhibition, 58 are historic posters from boycott movements. A smaller curated show may be displayed using 43 posters if your space cannot accommodate the entire show. 2. Do we have to exhibit all posters? Our hope is that all posters will be exhibited, either in the full show (61 posters) or the smaller show (43 posters). Each poster is numbered on the front of the poster with artist information. The gallery guide presents the order of the posters. 3. How much space is needed for the exhibition? Each poster averages 18”x24” in size. Allowing for space between posters, it is estimated that 95-150 linear feet is needed to hang the exhibition. 4. How much will it cost to bring the exhibition to my community? The host committee agrees to pay for shipping the poster crate and covering all local costs (space rental, publicity, opening reception, etc.). Shipping the crate averages around $100. 5. When can I bring the exhibition to my community? AFSC is coordinating the touring exhibition around the country for 2014, 2015, and 2016. It is expected that a location will host the exhibition a minimum of one week. To reserve a date, email boycottposter@afsc.org An online calendar will be available in 2014. 6. How do I display the posters? The 61 posters arrive flat and with a zigzag hanger attached at the back for hanging. Specific directions for hanging are detailed in the tool kit: “Guide to Hanging the Exhibition” 7. What happens if a poster is lost, damaged, or stolen? If a poster is lost, damaged, or stolen the host will be charged $50 per poster to reproduce a duplicate. The host should contact AFSC immediately if a duplicate poster is needed. (boycottposter@afsc.org) 8. Are the posters for sale? Posters are the property of the Center for the Study of Political Graphics. Some posters, including the title poster is available for sale via CSPG’s website, www.politicalgraphics.org 9. Why did AFSC and CSPG prepare this exhibition? This exhibition uses the power of poster art to provide a visual history of economic activism over the last 60 years. Economic boycotts are one of the most widely used forms of nonviolent protest and have been used for centuries, by both the political left and right. The most successful boycotts have been ones that embodied nonviolent strategies and ideals, and empowered individuals to challenge powerful corporations and governments through passionate grassroots movements. This exhibition is not intended to be comprehensive, although an effort was made to include diverse and successful campaigns. The curators of the exhibition hope that viewers will be challenged to evaluate their economic choices and to consider whether or not our choices contribute to a more just and peaceful world. 10.Where do I get more information about hosting the exhibition? Contacting us by email will be most efficient: boycottposter@afsc.org. If you wish to speak to someone by phone, please call 312-427-2533 and ask for the Boycott Poster contact staff. From: Catherine Baker > Date: Monday, December 9, 2013 5:46 PM To: "BoycottPoster@afsc.org" > Subject: interested in hosting exhibit in January Hello AFSC, I am writing on behalf of the adult education committee at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Bethesda, Maryland. I see on your website that you are making the exhibit available for community groups. Given Mandela's recent death and the attention that this occasion is revisiting on apartheid, the upcoming celebration of MLK's birthday, and Redeemer's interest in justice in Palestine, the adult education committee would like to explore the possibility of hosting the exhibit.. Ideally, we would show the posters in conjunction with a presentation at an adult forum on a Sunday morning in January (preferably January 12 or 19). However, our Parish Hall is not nearly large enough to hold 61 posters. Would it be possible for us to borrow a selection of posters or, alternatively, do you have the posters available in a slide show that we could use? Also, do you have any speakers in the DC area who might be available on those January dates or do you have a discussion guide or curriculum? On occasion our church has hosted events for the wider community which have attracted between 50-60 people, e.g., on a late Sunday afternoon. We might be able to plan that extra event. I can be contacted by return email or by cell at 301-922-6312.
