Hello Dan ,
Nice surprise ! I am happy you have included our ' A City as aTree for Human Rights' into the city's archives .
Just so you know: this project will be exhibited at the CIVA - the International Center for the City and Architecture - in Brussels from february till may 2014. Ramallah is a corner stone of Inscrire's work and we will make a very large poster of it ( 6mx 3m) at the entrance of the exhibition.
If you want me to send you text about the project, just ask, we have all you need.
Do you know if there was ever some press articles that came out ? We would love to have them in our archives too.
Thank you so much in advance,
Very sincerely
Françoise Schein

Hello Françoise,
I was walking around Ramallah at 5:30 this am (jet lag...I just got in the night before) and my hotel is just across the street from the Baladia and I stumbled on the Inscrire mural in a deep-sleepy state and was...amazed. I thought I was dreaming. I climbed over the wall (I didn't discover the steps till afterwards!) and read the entire work.
Sliman Mansour is my dear friend of many years and I sent him the PPPA link as well. I am so proud to be part of a movement that expresses itself, time and again, without let up, through the arts. Thank you for your work.
PLEASE ... when you make that poster send me the jpeg...I will add that to the PPPA with any links you want. Our pleasure.
I will keep my eyes open for any press about the mural/Inscrire...
in solidarity,
Dan

Dear
Dan Walsh has discovered the mural that we created in Ramallah recently and called " A city as a tree for Human Rights"
Here are some additional information:
author: artist Françoise Schein
Production : Association Inscrire
website : www.inscrire.com
Sponsor : The Belgian Consulate in Jerusalem
Project manager : Katia de Radiguès
Owner: The Municipality of Ramallah
studio : Al-Mahattah Gallery
Participants: students of the the IAAP - International Academy of Art Palestine, the Palestinian Technical College, the Birzeit University and with the general population of the City of Ramallah.
Story: this project is a work of art designed by Françoise Schein and created with the participation of more than one hundred students and inhabitants of the City of Ramallah. The artist created the design of the " tree" after the map of the city. Together with the student the map was produced in ceramics. Each student was invited to create a representation of one article of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights in one of the leave of the " tree". All around the tree one can see the black dots, representing disseminated colonies. This project is part of a network of artpiece by Association Inscrire " To Write the Human Rights " all over the world. w
THE ARTISTS SPEECH for the inauguration of Inscrire’s project in Ramallah, the 31th october 2011 :
It is with an immense pleasure for us to be here in Ramallah for the inauguration of our symbolic piece of art that I called « A City as a Tree for Human Rights » :
Yes, it is a tree, but a very special tree based on the Map of Ramallah. A tree for peace expressed by us with the participation of the students of the International Art Academy Palestine and the Young women of the Palestine Technical School, the students of the Architecture Department of the Birzeit University. We worked all together at the Al-Mahattah Gallery to create our tree for Human Rights;
Yes, it is a tree, and you can see in each of its leaves, that there is an image representing one of the 30 articles of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, all painted by the students. Together we created a unique tree similar to the beautiful almond trees described by Mahmoud Darwich to whom we also pay a tribute with this tree.
The Declaration of Human Rights is one of the most fundamental and beautiful text of all democratic societies; it was written in 1948 when Palestine should have been declared as a country. Our tree presents this idea in its essence. Our tree with its branches and leaves grows in the earth of Palestine and its leaves talk and tell us the Human Rights, for all people .
When we were making the tree, while working with the students, one of them Monther, gave us this key that he had made himself and he told us : -“ It is the key to Palestine , now Palestine is your country too”.
We have found that gesture to be so right, so true, such a beautiful metaphor for your legal desire to have a home land.
We sincerely hope that this work of art will help you to achieve this goal. It is our modest stone to the construction of Palestine as a country.
It is our modest message to all the United Nations to recognize Palestine as a country.
It is our Wall for Citizenship, our wall for Equality, our wall for Liberties, our wall for Justice and Solidarity,it is our wall for Dignity.
These 6 thematics are the specific values that the United Nations defends! They believe in it,
So do you, And so do we,
Chokrane
