A painting about the opening of the new building of the Society for the Working Classes on June 13, 2010 in Amsterdam
The Society for the Working Classes was founded in 1854 by several concerned 'foremen'. They set themselves the goal to promote moral and material interests of the working classes.
On June 13, 1883 was the celebration of the opening of their new building at the Kloveniersburgwal 87-89 in Amsterdam. On the painting is a view of the Auditorium where chairman FC Tromp gave a speech that day titled "Labor is the only way to happiness and contentment." The Company's activities included working on the establishment of technical schools. The Company also began first with a streetcleaning service, which later was acquired by the municipality.
