Thanks. This is interesting. I have encountered the WHU in the CzA archives though I’d need to look again to get the specifics. I’m general it was an Israeli led initiative in the 1950s to get Modern Hebrew to be taught around the jewish world.

The text of the poster explains the concept of the sil’u sela which I think is the organization’s innovation. It’s basically “contribute a stone” (lit, “stone a stone”) to the rebuilding of the destroyed edifice of Hebrew culture. It’s taking Hebrew culture as a metaphorical stone building.

Let me know if you need more precision.

Hello Liora,

I hope I am not being presumptuous of your time but a colleague suggested I send my q's about this poster to you:

http://www.palestineposterproject.org/poster/translation-in-progress-dec-2018-7

We could not find anything online about WHU and none of the Hebrew speakers who help PPPA with translations is sure what “Sil’u Sela” means. Do you?

Many thanks,

Dan Walsh/PPPA
