A commemoration of the life and martyrdom of Mohammad al-Aswad, "Guevara Gaza," was organized by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine in the western area of Gaza on March 9, 2008. March 9 has been recognized as "Martyr's Day" since 1973, when Guevara Gaza was martyred in a fierce battle with occupation forces.
Comrade Jamil Mezher, member of the Central Committee of the PFLP, spoke at the event, calling for national unity of the Palestinian people, unified resistance, and the end of internal Palestinian division, calling upon Abu Mazen to end the futile negotiations with the enemy.
Many cadres and leaders of the PFLP and large numbers of others participated in the event, as did many social and civil society organizations. Political Bureau members Dr. Rabah Muhanna and Maryam Abu Daqqa participated in the event as well, as comrades of Mohammad al-Aswad spoke, remembering his life and his activity, and pledging to continue in his path of struggle for liberation.
Cultural performances and activities, including a dabkeh performance, were also part of the event, and the families of many martyrs were honored and recognized, and plaques presented to them in honor of their martyrdom.
Mohammad al-Aswad, "Guevara Gaza," was a leader of the Front in Gaza. Born on January 6, 1946, he joined the Arab Nationalist Movement at an early age and continued into the PFLP with its founding. His political and military leadership in Gaza were outstanding, and Gaza was both a stronghold of the resistance and a center for strong political and social organizing. Guevara Gaza faced Sharon as the face of the occupation, as he served as the occupation military commander over Gaza at the time. He was martyred in a fierce battle with occupation forces on March 9, 1973, and since that day, Martyr's Day is recognized annually in recognition of his struggle and his life, and a pledge to continue along his path and the path of all of the martyrs - of resistance until liberation.
