Let Me Work - Buy the Products of the Land of Israel

Hebrew translation: (from MFA site for this poster) "Buy local products" was the commercial slogan of the Land of Israel in the 1930s and 1940s. The flooding of local markets with fresh farm produce from neighboring countries, and the import of industrial goods from Europe, obligated the Jewish community in the Land of Israel to defend its fledgling agriculture and industry. CREATE EMPLOYEMNT, BUY PRODUCTS OF THE LAND OF ISRAEL

Buy local products" was the commercial slogan of the Land of Israel in the 1930s and 1940s. Definitely Yohanan Simon. It's in the catalogue (Tel Aviv Museum), p. 254. Here's their caption for it: (their translation) Made in Israel, 1949, lino-cut, 70 x 50 Hashomer Hatza'ir Archives, Givat Haviva My translation for the poster: Top: Let me work Bottom: Buy local products (totseret ha-aretz=product of the land (land=Israel) Now, in an Israel Museum catalogue for an exhibition on the entire campaign of Totseret Ha-aretz, the poster is also listed (p. 14) and there they list it as 1930s, stone print (whatever that means, my translation, there's no English here). And their copy comes from the CZA. I would trust the Tel Aviv Museum catalogue sooner. It was a major show, and their curation, I think, is generally more academic. As for institution, there's no attribution given on the poster itself. From the look of it, there were so many institutions and private companies involved in the campaign that it would be difficult to say for sure who financed this particular poster. Simon was a big presence in Ha-shomer ha-tsa'ir on the extreme left wing of the Zionist movement, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't have done this for the histadrut. Just can't say with certainty that he did. But it could have been produced by the kibbutz movement itself (Kibbutz Artsi, which was the kibbutz wing of Mapam, the political party of Ha-shomer Ha-tsa'ir). Or it could have been for Mapam, or a host of others. Want to fund me on a trip to Israel to check the archives and find out? e.
