Excerpt:
Through political poster art, the PLO, with Fatah at its helm, sought to internationally legitimize the Palestinian resistance as both part of a global liberation movement and also as representing all Palestinians, both throughout the Diaspora and within Palestine’s historic borders. As this chapter will show, political posters were key to promoting this message of collectivity and cooperation. Moreover, both the PLO and Fatah appropriated the political prisoner experience to showcase these ideals in lieu of highlighting their top-down functioning. Through a range of political poster examples, this chapter shows how the visual shift from collective to individual representation reflects a significant change in the spirit of the prisoner movement since the 1980s, as well as a shift in the political goals of the PLO and Fatah.
