The Palestinian Musical Alphabet

Analysis / Interpretation / Press / Source

The Musical Alphabet of Palestine

A new project by Ma3azef, The Musical Alphabet of Palestine connects 28 letters to 28 carefully selected songs from the Palestinian music archive. Inspired by the original Palestinian Alphabet poster by Mohieddine El Labbad, published over 40 years ago by Dar El Fata El Arabi, this reimagining combines history, music, and design.

The poster, with artwork by Hey Porter!, brings a cultural classic to life through music, highlighting the depth and diversity of Palestinian heritage. Printed in A2 size, it includes a QR code linking to more details about the music and the stories behind it.

We will be sending all proceeds from sales will be donated to Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), contributing to essential healthcare and humanitarian aid.

This project is a blend of art and music, offering a meaningful way to celebrate Palestinian culture and support its communities.

A revolution which does not aim at changing me by changing the relations between people does not interest me; what is more, I doubt whether a revolution which does not affect me enough to transform me is really a revolution at all. The Palestinian revolution has established new kinds of relations which have changed me, and in this sense the Palestinian revolution is my revolution.

Comrade Jinane,

So nice of you to write. I just edited up the copy at the The Palestinian Musical Alphabet page at the PPPA site with some hot links.

I hesitate to take you up on your offer of a copy of the poster since I think it will cost a small fortune to send from UK. Yes? However, if you still want to do this lovely act may I suggest you send six (6) copies? Here's why: We will get those copies placed in prestigious national libraries, university Special Collections, international archives and the like. This is one of the ways we work to leverage the Palestine poster genre into the Western canon. You can see our progress on this specific project here:

https://www.palestineposterproject.org/special-collections/pppa-gifted-postersacknowledgement-letters

We are happy to Venmo or Paypal you some money to offset costs and shipping if you like.

Also, do you have an IG tag or website for Hey Porter? PPPA is an artist-centered site and we like to feature their links when available.

Here is a shipping address I use:

Walsh

C/O Diggs

4025 Adams Drive

Silver Spring, MD 20902 USA

Please let me know by email if/when you ship so we can keep an eye out for the tube.

Standing With Gaza,

Dan

PS: Do you happen to have an English-language translation of the Arabic text on the poster? If you can send that to us we will add it to the Alphabet's page which, in our experience, is very helpful to Western visitors to the site. D
