RETALIATION AND RESCUE!

The establishment of a Jewish fighting unit in 1944 was a source of pride for Jews in the Land of Israel. Tens of thousands of these Jews had been serving in the British forces, but without group recognition. Thanks to pressure from Jewish leaders and excellent service by the first volunteers, a struggle of almost five years resulted in British agreement to establish the Jewish Fighting Brigade with 5,500 troops. Its symbol was the Star of David, and its banner was the blue-and-white national flag. (1945)
