On 30 July 1965, he was elected Archibishop and became titular Archibishop of Caesarea in Palestine of the melkites and Melkite Patriarchal Vicar of Jerusalem. On 18 August 1974, he was arrested by the Israeli police for transporting firerams in his car to the West Bank on behalf of the Palestine Liberation Organization PLO, using his diplomatic status. Sentenced to twelve years in prison, he renounced his functions as Patriarchal Vicar. Maximos V, the Patriarch of the Melkite Church, criticised his conviction, pointing out that bishops had committed illegal actions to save Jews from the Nazis and recalling that Israel had illegally entered East Jerusalem. In 1978, following an intervention by the Vatican, he was released. In 1979, he played a key role during the American hostage crises in Iran, obtaining the return of the bodies of Americans killed during their attempt to free the hostages. In 2003, he established himself as an opponent of the Iraq War. Camilo Torres Restrepo (1929-1966) was a Colombian Catholic priest who studied sociology and political science in the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium. He came back to Colombia in 1958 and became chaplain of the National University in Bogota. In 1963, he chaired the first National Congress of Sociology. Around January 1966, he joined the guerrilleros of the National Liberation Army ELN but, in his first fight, when ELN ambushed a Colombian military patrol on February 15, he was killed.
