Seized In Beirut

Translation / Interpretation / Caption Text / Source
Seized in Beirut The Plundered Archives of the Palestinian Cinema Institution and Cultural Arts Section By: Rona Sela Abstract: One of the biggest acts of plunder by Israel was of a vast Palestinian film archive looted by Israeli military forces in Beirut in 1982. These films are under the control of the Israel Defense Forces Archive, which thus conceals many of them and the information regarding their origin. This article documents my efforts to disclose the films and locate their originating institutions in Beirut, to chart their history, name their film-makers and open a discussion about returning them to their rightful owners. It also provides a deeper understanding of colonial mechanisms of looting and truth production. I discuss the Third Palestine Cinema Movement and the various institutions that were part of the Palestinian revolution in the 1970s, with a focus on the Cultural Arts Section managed by Ismail Shammout. Dear Mr. Dan Walsh,

I am curator and art-historian (http://www.ronasela.com/en/index.asp), currently working on a video research dedicated to Palestinian visual history. The video research will be shown in Non-profit organizations, such as Art museums, festivals etc. I am interested to use various posters from the Palestine Posters Project Archive, especially those dedicated to the Palestine Film Institute. Mr. David Tartakovers, who sends his regards, advised me to be in contact with you.

I would appreciate if you can please let me know if it would be possible to use some posters, and if so what are the procedures.

Thank you in advance for your assistance and I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely yours, rona

Dear Dan,

Thank you for your kind e-mail.

Would it be possible to receive your assistance regarding the copy-rights of the attached poster

http://www.palestineposterproject.org/poster/victory-in-their-eyes.

Would it be: Dr. Shafiq Radwan or Samir Nasr? Would it be possible to receive their contacts? They are not in the web-site.

with other posters the instructions are clear.

Thank you again, rona

Hi Rona,

Unfortunately, I am no help you today.

Hi Dan

yes, she’s been firing a few emails at and around me regarding this project too….

As you know, working in partnership with a Tel Aviv University research project (which is what this is) is a completely different, and for us impossible, proposition to the Austrian Jewish museum question… Which means I’m being polite in response to her initial queries, but I’m actually fending her requests off (she’s asking for access to all the rare old Palestine films we screened at last year’s events… many of which are not even vaguely accessible to Palestinian academics, institutions, or students… so it’s a no-brainer really).

I’m sure she’s a fine person of course! But that’s neither here nor there in such circumstances.

best,

n

Brother Nick,

It was no part of my forwarding that you actually work/cooperate with her.

We are all BDS!

I just wanted you to know the effort exists.

sure, yes!

I didn’t think you were working with her, or intend to sound ‘preachy’! Not at all… was just letting you know she’d been in touch here and that i was dodging the same issue… as nimbly as one can...
