Artists' Statement:
My art is for the working class. It’s for picket lines, union halls, my fellow workers' homes, classrooms, and for the streets. My work expresses the hopes, aspirations and struggles of regular people. It’s tool to express ideas; to communicate, and to bring life and energy to social movements. A story moves people; a narrative that one can relate to helps people understand the issue at hand. I use printmaking to proliferate my work.
Print has a long tradition tied to movements for liberation precisely because of its ability to spread ideas through multiples. The relief cut translates as stark, bold, powerful, and sometimes rough or off handed. This rough aesthetic lends itself to the melancholy running through my work, but also to the strength and perseverance of my subjects. Printmaking and painting murals on the street is something we do together.
I fight for that day when we working people band together to take control of our lives and futures. The print shop and the murals on the street give life to these aspirations.
