We are pleased to publish: Catalog 163: Come Build the New Land! Images of Israel in Zionist Posters for Diaspora Jews from the 1950s & 60s. Though already almost five decades old at the founding of the state of Israel, the Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemet LeYisrael in Hebrew, or KKL) in the early statehood period continued to depend on international support for its work in support of the newly established Jewish state. Toward that end, it produced posters for distribution to Synagogues, Jewish community centers, and other Jewish institutions around the world, part of a campaign to continue to build support for Israel among diaspora Jews: support in the form of travel, political support, and money. These JNF/KKL posters generally reflect mid-century design and make use of recurring themes: happy healthy people, most often children, working on the soil, bringing in the bounty, converting the rock and desert from wasteland to a simple but robust homeland. The Israelis depicted would made most American secular and non-Haredi Jews of the mid-20th Century very comfortable: Men are beardless but generally (though not always) have their heads covered, as do most boys; Women wear skirts or dresses and short sleves. Some girls wear skirts or dresses; others wear shorts. Active outdoor work is being done by men or children (but not women). Other posters in the highlight specific holidays, celebrations, or campaigns. But whatever the design, the message was clear: Israel is a success; it is a happy place full of hardworking people which should be visited and supported.
