Artist's Statement

New artwork inspired by the work of @palestinian_embroidery_obi and @hanin.gaza.jp

The Palestine Obi Embroidery Project works with women in Gaza and the West Bank, including Palestinian women living in refugee camps, to combine traditional Japanese kimono with the art of Palestinian embroidery (tatreez). After the Nakba in 1948, when more than 700,000 people were expelled from their homes across Palestine, Palestinian embroidery art became a symbol of displacement and resistance.

Women wore their thobes as a statement of the very ‘existence’ of the villages they had been expelled from.
