Dear Dan (CC: Nadja):
Hi, this is Michael Baers writing again. After many more months of work, my graphic novel on the Picasso in Palestine project is finally to be released soon, and I wanted to use one image from the archive within it (please see attached). I hope you will grant your consent to this. The work will be available on the Haus der Kulturen der Welt's website and as a free download. If you could kindly grant your consent, it would be great if you could mail a release directly to Nadja Talmi. Below is her comment on the wording such a release should take.
All the best,
Michael Baers
It would be important that they state something like this:
I hereby confirm that I am the right holder of the image x and that I grant Michael Baers the permission to use the image for free in his online graphic novel “An Oral history of Picasso in Palestine”. The permission includes the publication of the image on the website of Haus der Kulturen der Welt, in the pdf version of the graphic novel which can be downloaded for free as well as for press announcements and press coverage.

Hello Michael,
Let me begin by saying that I look forward to reading "Picasso In Palestine" and that it does wonderful things to promote international solidarity with the Palestinian people. I salute your effort.
I will post a "Picasso In Palestine" page at the PPPA site when it is ready and will add any links you send me as well. This being said I cannot give you the permission you ask for because I do not own or have the authority to do so. Please read the FAQ's at the link at the top of the PPPA site especially those related to credits and "fair use" which I would say covers your project.
Since you included the graphic you would like to use, an early poster by Ismail Shammout, I am going to send his son, Bashar, a copy of this email and ask him to reply to you directly. It may be that he can give you the permission you seek. I am sure he will do so if he can.
Please reply to this email so I know you got it and please keep me informed as to your progress.
mad respect,
Dan Walsh, Curator/PPPA

Hi Dan,
dear Michael,
thanks for this approach. Michael, you’re welcome to use the mentioned painting by my father as you described. We (my mother and brothers) request only that the painting is clearly titled as by the Palestinian artist ‘Ismail Shammout’.
Two additional notes: This water colour painting belongs to the series named “Tal AlZaatar” which my father had created back in 1976 in Berlin (former East Berlin). This might be interesting for your project as it will be hosted by the “Haus der Kulturen der Welt” which is also located in Berlin.
The other info is that I also live in Germany, in Gütersloh. So if it happens that you Michael also live in Germany, you will be most welcome to contact me if further issues occur..
Warmest regards
Bashar Shammout

Dear Bashar (cc: Dan, Nadja):
Thanks for your permission. Just so I am clear about how you would like the credit to appear, is it Ok to include the credits in the overall list of acknowledgements (which it will be anyway) and in addition beneath the image. Since thus far photo credits are not appearing alongside the images (since there are no captions), but at the beginning of the work, I would ask if you are OK with this arrangement. It would also be helpful to know how you would like the credit to be worded. It could be something like this: from the series "Tal AlZaatar" by Ismail Shammout, courtesy of Bashar Shammout (if you would like your mother and brothers also to acknowledged in the credits, by all means please send me their names!). Would it be OK to also mention in the credit the PPP archive?
Below is some information from my colleague Nadja at the HKW about what is required for a release. And finally, it is indeed interesting to know where this work was produced and I would be very interested to research in greater depth the history of Palestinian liberation graphics. If you are ever in Berlin, please don't hesitate to contact me.
All the best,
Michael Baers

Dear Michael,
I'm fine with all of what you suggested below. If you want to mention "courtesy" then please mention "courtesy of family Shammout" instead of "Bashar", thanks.. Of course you're welcome to mention the PPP in the credit.
For you Nadja, here is the required text:
On behalf of our family Shammout, I hereby confirm that we are the right holder of the image named "Tal Alzaatar - Dignity in Grief - Ismail Shammout, 1976" and that I grant Mr. Michael Baers the permission to use the image for free in his online graphic novel “An Oral history of Picasso in Palestine”. The permission includes the publication of the image on the website of Haus der Kulturen der Welt www.hkw.de, in the pdf version of the graphic novel while mentioning the name "Ismail Shammout" in the form as agreed on with Mr. Baers, and which can be downloaded for free and used for press announcements and press coverage. In case of press announcements and press coverage, please always refer in written form to the name "Ismail Shammout" as the artist.
Warmest regards to all, and please let me know once the PDF is online..
