June 7, 1971
NEW YORK (Jun. 6)
The Israeli Arts and Crafts Center of the America-Israel Cultural Foundation will sponsor an exhibition of 16 highly decorative compositions created by Polish born artist Kopel Gurwin, beginning Tuesday and continuing through Sept. 6 at the Jewish Museum. The works, banners, carried out in felt which is then stitched onto coarse linen, are most figurative and center around Biblical themes. After deciding upon the ultimate composition, the artist sews the felt shapes onto the linen or wool background. Square Hebrew letters forming the Biblical quotations from which the themes derive, are then often utilized to frame the basic design of the works which depict various Biblical personages and events, among them “Exodus,” “The Sorrow of Job,” and the “Creation of Woman.” Gurwin, 47, was in concentration camps during World War II.
