Artist's Statement
For the Whole Entire World, a rubber cut arrangement of an excerpt from Shabbat 54b (from the Talmud) with the figures of Moses and Aaron.
In the Hebrew month of Elul we prepare to be called to account. The High Holy Days liturgy and the process of ודוי communal confession suggests that we are all accountable together, and collectively. And why? The rabbis of the Talmud explained that if we are able to protest another’s sins and do not, we will be held accountable for those sins.
These figures of Moses and Aaron appear in various prayer books, haggadot dating from the 1300s, illustrated chumashim, on metal Torah shields and textile Torah binders, and on paper amulets. I was particularly taken with a series of colorful Simchat Torah flags from Warsaw. Moses appears holding the tablets of the Ten Commandments, sometimes with a staff and with beams of light coming from his head. Aaron appears wearing the priestly vestments.
I am selling these prints - $40 for black-and-white, and $50 for color on white or tan. 25% of proceeds will be donated to Grassroots International Palestine Emergency Fund, which sends 100% of funds to local partners in Palestine.
*if you’re a rabbi for ceasefire I’ll send you one as a gift*
