WOMEN, JOIN THE ARMY
Women also were urged to enlist in the other women's auxiliary unites of British forces, to help in various roles. Thousands of young women undertook the challenge in many units, mainly in Egypt and the Land of Israel. (World War II)
The same dealer who won the "Defend Your Homeland" poster also took this condition B+ 37¼" x 25" Otte Wallish (1903-1977) poster from 1940 that urged women to enlist in the women's auxiliary units of British forces, which many thousands of young women did "mainly in Egypt and the Land of Israel." Another auction record was realized when the poster brought $7800 (est. $3000/4000).
by Richard de Thuin Photos courtesy Swann It was an afternoon for auction records at Swann's sale of vintage posters on February 8 in New York City. Two skiing and two Judaica posters brought record prices, with the Judaica posters selling to dealers and the skiing posters to collectors. These four record-breakers were among 21 of the top-selling posters, 15 of which were won by collectors and the remainder by dealers, with realized bids from $19,200 (includes buyer's premium) to $4320. At Swann's previous vintage poster auctions, there was a scarcity of dealers winning the top-selling lots; apparently the market for resale has regained a bit of momentum. The second-highest selling lot was a Herbert Bayer "Ski in Aspen" (Colorado) poster from 1946 that realized $16,800. Another ski poster, a Dartmouth Winter Carnival design from 1940, earned $6360. The two Judaica posters, "Defend Your Homeland" by Kauffman and "Women — Join the Army" from 1940 by Otte Wallish, both sold to the same phone bidder for $7800. A selection of ski, winter resort, and sports posters kicked off the auction, and within the ski category were 14 Dartmouth Carnival and Winter Carnival posters, all of which found buyers. This group was followed by nine Russian posters and then a sizable number of Hebraic and Judaic posters. Other categories included posters that represented circus and music hall, travel, and international posters, of which there were over 160 examples, including the top-selling lot, La Dame Aux Camelias (1896) by Alphonse Mucha, which brought $19,200 from a collector. In summing up the auction, Nicholas Lowry, Swann's president and poster specialist, commented that it was a robust auction and one driven by interest in niche collecting categories such as skiing, circus, Judaica, and travel posters. "As the market becomes more sophisticated, we see a shift from the 'decorative' pieces that have driven the market for the past several years," he added. Total sale figures reached $445,581. Of the 417 lots offered, 223 sold for a 47% buy-in rate by lot. Some of us will take Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island too, as the song goes. The rest of us will take four auction records and 219 other lots of vintage posters to rev us up. For more information, call Swann at (212) 254-4710 or visit (www.swanngalleries.com).
